5248427156_03af8171ac_mQuite some time ago now I wrote a post called is Crash Dieting Safe and Can It Work? Here is the follow-up to this post with more up-to-date data and information from a recent study from Australia .
And apparently what they say is put behind you. What has been said in the past and forget steady dieting the best way to get rid of excess weight is to lose it fast. From what they say not only was it wrong but there was no proof to back it up.
And now it seems as more and more people put on weight the advice now is to shed it faster rather than slower. Even certain healthcare professionals are starting to come around to this way of thinking, but the big problem is it isn’t reaching people who are trying to lose weight and eat healthily.
Katrina Purcell, is a dietician in Australia and is head of the research in debunking the crash diet myths.
She got hold of some data from dieticians and nutritionists and was alarmed to find that 99 percent of the people they were consulting were told to use the steady-state form of dieting rather than the quicker approach.
She was quoted as saying this: “Some 99.2 per cent of nutritionists and dieticians say they recommend to their patients gradual weight loss over more rapid,” she says.
“However, there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support their claim.” And she adds, with more than 60 per cent of Australians now overweight or obese, the ‘slow and steady’ message doesn’t seem to be having much effect.
Katrina however, does want to offer a word of caution she says that she does not necessarily recommend crash dieting and nor does she recommend fad diets either.
When the study was done it was under controlled conditions, and help was available most of the time to the participants in case of any problems.
Here is what she did, she compared the results from some people in one group, which used the quick method. They lost 1 1/2 kilograms over a period of 12 weeks, and these results were compared to participants using the slower method.
All the people on the study had a body weight of 100 kilograms and aBMI of 30. When the results were finalised they found the people in the quick group had a 83 percent success rate, in reaching their 15 percent weight loss goal.
Compared to the other group which had a 50 percent success rate, Katrina seems to think that the reason for this is purely psychological but is keeping an open mind and hoping to find if there may be other reasons for it.
She said: “Those people in the rapid group remained more motivated and were able to see the results coming,” she says. “Those in the gradual group were more prone to becoming disenchanted.”
In the steady-state group, the dropout rate was a lot higher compared to those in the rapid group. An endocrinologist had this to say about the findings.
One of the things that is said a lot about losing weight quickly is if you tend to crash diet it slows your metabolism down, but he says that is nonsense, here is what he said.
“Before, after and during weight loss programs there is hardly any variation in a person’s metabolic rate,” he says. “I have an expensive machine which measures the metabolic rate and shows it may possibly drop back 50 to 100 calories during a period of rapid weight loss.
“But this can be dealt with by adding another 10 minutes of exercise a day.”

Some of us carry a spare tire around our waists. Turns out it's the worst place to carry weight since diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease are linked to it. It can even lead to early death. Now there's more reason to battle the bulge — new research shows that a jiggle around your middle is also associated with impaired lung function. This type of harmful "abdominal obesity" is defined as a waist that's greater than 35 inches for women and 40 for men. Poor lung function is linked to higher rates of hospitalization and deaths from heart disease because researchers say that belly fat can get in the way of the normal functioning of your diaphragm and chest. Belly Fat: A Danger to Your Health

Measuring your waistline may be more important than weighing yourself because belly fat can put you at risk for several health conditions.

Whether you call it belly fat, middle-age spread, or that tire around your waistline, the fat that you carry in your belly may be more dangerous than the fat elsewhere on your body. Doctors call this belly fat visceral fat, and it is different from the fat you can pinch with your fingers. Visceral belly fat is located inside your belly, deep in with your abdominal organs, which is why it pushes out your waistline.
"Waistline circumference is an important indicator of cardiovascular disease risk, regardless of whether you are overweight,” says Lanah J. Brennan, RD, CDE (certified diabetes educator), a nutrition expert who runs Reactive Nutrition, LLC, a nutrition and diet center in Lafayette, La. “Men with a waistline greater than 40 inches and women with a waistline greater than 35 inches are at higher risk for disease."
Why Belly Fat Is Dangerous
Here are some of the health hazards that have been associated with visceral belly fat:
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Breast cancer
The reasons for the increased dangers of visceral fat as opposed to subcutaneous (under the skin) fat are not completely clear. But it is known that this type of fat produces chemicals called cytokines and other substances that affect insulin sensitivity, blood clotting, and the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, deep belly fat is very close to a large abdominal vein called the portal vein. When fatty acids from visceral fat enter this vein, they travel directly to the liver and can have a negative effect on cholesterol levels.

Amy Louise Nelson, 34, packed on 50 pounds during her first pregnancy and 40 pounds during her second. While she was able to lose the weight rather quickly after she delivered, the extra pounds took a toll on her already damaged joints. Nelson, a stay-at-home mother in Rochester, Minn., was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) 11 years ago. As is the case with many women, Nelson’s RA took a break while she was pregnant.

“Even though I was in remission, I was still abusing my damaged joints with the extra weight I was carrying around,” she says. Any way you slice it, pregnancy is physically hard on the body, and it may be particularly taxing if you have RA, an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body mistakenly attacks its own joints, causing pain, inflammation, and ultimately, joint damage. Gaining weight, whether from pregnancy or at other points during your life, can worsen this joint damage.

The best way to avoid having too much weight to lose post-pregnancy is simple: Don’t gain too much weight in the first place. A total of 25-35 pounds is generally considered a safe amount of weight gain during pregnancy, but you should ask your doctor to see what is a safe amount for you.

Nelson credits breastfeeding for helping her lose her pregnancy weight, and that certainly helps many women. But if you have a flare after delivery and need to take certain medications that aren't safe when breastfeeding, you may not be able to nurse your baby. While RA tends to go into remission during pregnancy, it may flare a few months after the baby is born. Some medications are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, while others are not.

Prednisone, a steroid, is on the safe list. But women who take it need to pay attention to their diets and may need supplements, if their doctors recommend them. “A good prenatal vitamin is essential, and if you are taking prednisone, you are at higher risk of bone loss, so you may need more calcium and vitamin D,” says Shreyasee Amin, MD, a rheumatologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

“Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet is key for any pregnant woman,” says Manju Monga, MD, the Berel Held Professor and the division director of maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Texas. If you have any questions or concerns about your diet or weight gain, talk to your obstetrician or a registered dietitian to get some pointers.

“We will develop an individualized plan that may include starting the day with a healthy breakfast, and avoiding foods that contain empty calories,” says Dana Greene, MS, RD, a nutritionist in Brookline, Mass., who routinely counsels pregnant women and those trying to lose weight after pregnancy. “For women with RA, I will also discuss foods that are rich in calcium because many of them may be taking medications that cause bone thinning.”

What's the best way to trim your tummy?

Having a flat belly or so-called "six-pack abs" is a dream of most adults. If you're middle-aged, have ever been pregnant, or sometimes indulge in too much food or one too many beers, you probably have a spare tire you'd like to get rid of. So what's the best strategy for banishing belly fat? Is it as simple as adding certain foods to your diet, or doing particular exercises?

WebMD turned to the experts for answers on belly fat -- and the best ways to lose it.

The Answer to Flatter Abs

Don't despair; you can lose that spare tire, experts say. But there's no secret formula.

"There is no magic bullet, diet plan, specific food, or type of exercise that specifically targets belly fat. But the good news is belly fat is the first kind of fat you tend to lose when you lose weight," says Michael Jensen, MD, a Mayo Clinic endocrinology specialist and obesity researcher.

Whether you're an "apple" shape with excess belly fat, or a "pear" with wide hips and thighs, when you lose weight, you'll most likely lose proportionately more from the abdominal region than elsewhere.

"Ninety-nine percent of people who lose weight will lose it in the abdominal region before anywhere else -- and will lose proportionately more weight from the upper body," says Jensen, also a professor of medicine.

And why is that? "Visceral fat, the kind tucked deep inside your waistline, is more metabolically active and easier to lose than subcutaneous fat under the skin, especially if you have plenty of it," explains Penn State researcher Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD.

And the more weight you have to lose, the more quickly you're likely to start losing your belly fat, experts say.

"People who are significantly overweight may see quicker results in their belly than someone who has less to lose in that area, such as a postmenopausal pouch," says Georgia State University nutrition professor, Christine Rosenbloom, PhD, RD.

Can Whole Grains Help You Lose Belly Fat?

A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that a calorie-controlled diet rich in whole grains trimmed extra fat from the waistline of obese subjects.

Study participants who ate all whole grains (in addition to five servings of fruits and vegetables, three servings of low-fat dairy, and two servings of lean meat, fish, or poultry) lost more weight from the abdominal area than another group that ate the same diet, but with all refined grains.

"Eating a diet rich in whole grains while reducing refined carbohydrates changes the glucose and insulin response and makes it easier to mobilize fat stores," says study researcher Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD, a distinguished professor of nutritional sciences at Penn State University.

"Visceral fat is more metabolically active and easier to lose than subcutaneous fat, especially if you have plenty of it and the right conditions are met, such as the ones in our study."
